Welcome back to STEMI Systems online! There is a new Paper of the Month available, and all of our podcasts are archived for you to listen to. Every issue of the STEMI Systems newsletter is also available online.
Last month’s poll asked how frequently the guidelines for STEMI care should be updated. The majority of votes suggested that clinicians would like to see the STEMI guidelines updated yearly, or even every 6 months, a rate that is in stark contrast to the current schedule.
The more frequent release of updates to the STEMI guidelines would certainly appear to be advantageous in terms of endorsing existing recommendations, and considering information from newly published studies on treatment, timing, and transport of STEMI patients. But how easily could such rapid updates be adopted in practice, and how willing are institutions to keep pace? While we would like to hope that new guidelines are implemented soon after their release, it is clear that changes to STEMI systems, particularly large, whole network changes, will take some time to both filter through to all parties involved and then be realized in daily practice.
This month’s poll asks your opinion on ‘unsupported PCI’ – should institutions be allowed to perform PCI if there is no facility for cardiac surgery on site? Or does the benefit from wider access to PCI outweigh any risks? Share your opinions on this topic and any other on the discussion boards!
If you have not already done so, please register with STEMI Systems online for free – it is quick and easy, and as a registered user you will be able to access the newsletter archive, podcasts, Paper of the Month, participate in the forum, and vote in the polls, giving you an opportunity to contribute to the international STEMI care community.
Sincerely,
